OF WORSHIP SERVICES
Beginning
Sunday, January 4, 2009 we begin a new series entitled, “Tough Times Build
Community: Encouraging and Helping.”
Jan
4 – “Where Is God?”
Jan
11 – “Asking and Receiving”
Jan
18 – “A Sense of Togetherness”
Jan
25 – “Rediscovering Interdependence”

A NEW YEAR – A NEW BEGINNING – A NEW YOU!!! Start the 2009 off right by attending one of
the three brand new adult Sunday School electives. All three start next Sunday, January 4, and
will meet from 10:00 to 10:45 AM for the next six Sundays. Your choices are:
·
Study of
Proverbs: Meets in
classrooms 2&3, (across from the kitchen) with Ray Lokers and Cherrie
Bitcheno. The Book of Proverbs is full
of practical wisdom that covers all areas of our lives. We will be learning about these profound,
common sense, and sometimes surprising writings of King Solomon and
others.
·
MARGIN: Meets in the Music Room; with
Steve VanderWoude. If you have a bad
case of “Overload” and want to restore “Margin” back into all areas of your life
from finances to relationships. Then
join us in restoring emotional, physical, financial, and time reserves to our
overloaded lives.
·
Solo on
Sunday: Meets in
Room 5 with Sherwin Weener. If you find
yourself saying, “I wish I didn’t have to come to church alone,” this class is
for you! If you are single, divorced,
widowed, or you are married but your spouse does not attend worship with you,
join with others at Hager Park Church who share similar circumstances. The group discussion will provide opportunity
for shared understanding, biblical encouragement and mutual support.
Please return your registration to the designated area by
the member mailboxes TODAY. Additional sheets are located on
top of the mailboxes.

Mark your New Year
calendars with the dates of our 2009 Hager Park Blood Drives: All the drives are on Tuesdays – March 17,
June 2, September 15 and November 10.
Get ready for Epiphany
Many
Christian denominations celebrate Epiphany each year on or near January 6.
“Epiphany,” which means “showing forth,” celebrates the visit of the magi, or
wise men, to the baby Jesus. These men, also known as kings, saw the star that
led them to Bethlehem.
The
fact that these wise men were Gentiles, not Jews, teaches us an important theological
lesson: Their search for the Savior shows that Jesus came for all people.
In
1875, Philip Bliss wrote the hymn “The Light of the World Is Jesus.” The first
stanza captures the meaning of Epiphany, a season of light:
The
whole world was lost
In
the darkness of sin,
The
Light of the world is Jesus!
Like
sunshine at noonday,
His
glory shone in.
The
Light of the world is Jesus!
Youth
Ministries
Jr. High Guys!
We thought we'd take advantage of
Christmas Break to hang out and play some video games. Friday, January
2 from 10am to 2pm. Meet in the Youth Room. We'll provide some
pizza for lunch. Bring any games or systems you might want to play (no M
rated). Call BB if you have any questions (890-0244).
WOMEN’S MINISTRIES
LADIES: There will be a new evening Bible study
beginning on January 8, 2009. We will be
studying the book Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World. Plan to join us that first night at 7:00 PM
in the Youth Room to study Chapters 1 & 2.
If you need a book, contact Julie Van Oordt. We would love to have you join us!
WOMEN'S
RETREAT UPDATE: Sign-ups will resume in January for the Hager Park Women's
retreat on February 6 & 7, 2009. We
have 18 women signed up and have room for 26 more. The $20 covers the cost of lodging, 2 meals,
and entertainment activities. We plan to
leave church after dinner on Friday, February 6 (6:30 PM) and return by 4:30 PM
on Saturday, February 7. It is an event you
will NOT want to miss! Invite a friend,
sister, or mother ~ memories will be made!
See Terri Avink with any questions or give her a call at 662-9383.
We have a
great opportunity to “Be Active In Sharing Our Faith” on January 20, 2009. We invite women to
tour Clancy Street Ministries in downtown Grand Rapids. Clancy
Street Ministries is a local nonprofit organization that was birthed out of the
RCA, began in 1988 and has a mission to reach the people in the Belnap area for
Jesus Christ. In 1992 former Hager
Park members, Steve and Carol Faas, were hired as co-executive directors. Steve’s background included serving as a
marriage and family therapist and Carol a minister. We will be bringing items that Food Stamps
don’t allow. We will be collecting these items from December 14 through January 18. Suggestions are cleaning supplies, toilet
paper, hygienic items, etc. We also
offered to help them with anything they would like us to do and they suggested
giving the kitchen a good cleaning. More
information will be coming! We will
be collecting the items in the big blue box in the narthex. Thank you, Women’s Ministries
